King of Spades - The Golden Age
Apogee
Did it happen then?
You ask yourself
On days you feel earth's gravity
Pushing down so hard against your bones
Was it one of your defining moments?
Like when you held your sister's child
Or packed your life into a car
Or kissed her on that bench?
But instead
Could it have been
Some half-remembered hour:
When you fingered morning dew or
Gasped for breath in boundless laughing
Danced manic in a fervid fit of understanding
Felt your muscles cede to sleep - or climax?
Did you achieve your apogee
Some evening upon summer's meadow
Elbows pushing back against damp grass
Breathing deep the humid buzz
As you watched another golden hour
Fade to night?
In the cold kiss of this current instant
Each moment has moved into memory
Etched back into bedrock of the earth
Yet they all once floated into the air
Stretching fingers toward the sky
Ascending to the stratosphere
Proclaiming, "I am
Now"
